FOREWORD
- The Onehunga Heritage, is a new, revised and expanded edition of the centennial history of Onehunga published in 1977 under the title Onehunga – a brief history. It marks the end of 112 years of 'borough' status and records the birth of the Maungakiekie Ward, one of ten wards forming the new Auckland City.
- In just a few decades we have come a long way: entered the space age, experienced a world of high technology with communication by satellite, followed with interest journeys to the moon, and witnessed many more achievements than could ever have been dreamed of by those early pioneers.
- Still, one cannot help but read these pages with a sense of nostalgia for those long past days, and be left with a feeling of great respect and admiration for the early settlers. They came to a new land and laboured with their hands to shape Onehunga into what we enjoy today.
- Onehunga has earned its rightful place on world maps as a port. It has produced many sons and daughters of world renown, people we can be justly proud of.
However, I am sure we will learn of these matters and gain great enjoyment from reading these pages.
