Arable Farm Crops of New Zealand
- The production of arable crops in New Zealand, both as supplements to pastures for livestock and as “cash” crops, has been the subject of much research and experiment. The results have been introduced into farm practice rapidly and efficiently through advisory ser vices, and have been tried and tested in farm management in a wide range of environments.
- J. W. Hadfield's original Arable Farm Crops of New Zealand (1952) condensed into one volume valuable information on the subject that had been appearing over the years in official journals and bulletins, agricultural pub lications, and the daily press. His close associ ation with much of the first research work in New Zealand on crop production fitted him eminently both to appreciate the need and to provide the text for a handbook on the subject.
- J. H. Claridge, a young associate of Hadfield in the latter's early research work, became closely associated later with farm advisory work, seed certification, and development of export trade in New Zealand seeds and crops. His revision of Hadfield's first edition, here pre sented under the same title, reflects a sincere regard for the competence of the original treatment. His thoroughness in updating and adding to Hadfield's work should ensure the book's continued recognition as a standard reference for students, agricultural instructors, farmers, and stock and station agents.
