New Zealand - Kawhia - A panoramic view of the township of Kawhia. - 5/10/1922 - Unknown Photographer - Originally published in "The Auckland Weekly News" #336364 - Kawhia is one of three large natural inlets in the Tasman Sea coast of the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. - The harbour area was the birthplace of prominent Maori warrior chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngati Toa tribe, who lived in the area until the 1820s, when he, and his tribe along with Ngati Rārua and Ngati Koata migrated southwards. - Kawhia is known in Maori lore as the final resting-place of the ancestral waka (canoe) Tainui. #waikatoother
