A Picture Book of Old Auckland
- A Picture Book of Old Auckland presents a startling collection of period photographs which capture dramatically the look and "feel" of Auckland during its golden years around the turn of the century. Before humans imposed themselves and their works too greatly upon the natural surroundings. When in Ellerslie horses outnumbered people, when Mount Eden and Epsom were well-known for the excellence of the wheat grown in those places, when St George's and Freeman's Bays were true beach-edged, fish-filled bays.
- It is almost as if these were pictures from another world, so different and intriguing are the scenes — scenes which we thought we knew well — they offer us. Our loss in quality of life and beauty in the years since is emphasised by comparison with contemporary views from many of the same vantage points.
- There will be many who, looking through these pages, will wish we could somehow regain such an age, its fine air of wellbeing, its room to breathe, and its abundance of prettiness.
