Mokoia Island
- Located in Lake Rotorua
- Has an area of 1.35 square kilometres
- An uninhabited island
- A rhyolite lava dome
- Rising to 180 metres above the lake surface
- Formed after the Rotorua caldera collapsed and rhyolitic magma was pushed through the cracks
- The foreshores of the island have geothermal springs
- Also has rich volcanic soil
- The local Māori grew kumara on it
- Access is limited to tour parties only
Lake Rotorua
- The second largest lake in the North Island
- A mean depth of only 10 metres
- Considerably smaller than nearby Lake Tarawera
- Located in the Bay of Plenty region
- The city of Rotorua is sited on its southern shore
- Formed from the crater of a large volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Zone
