New Zealand - Christchurch - A busy scene in Cashel Street, looking west toward the Bridge of Remembrance - 6/12/1928 - Green and Hahn Photographer - Originally published in "The Auckland Weekly News" #336144 - Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. - The Avon River which flows through the city is named after the River Avon in Scotland. - Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. - The city was named after Christ Church, Oxford. - The Maori name for Christchurch is Ōtautahi ("the place of Tautahi")
