In 1869, at 16 years of age, Collis began his training with Hartley Webster, the New Plymouth photographer. Collis worked as a professional photographer, covering child studies, weddings and family groups, but he had a special talent for scenic photography and his collection provides a record of the growth of New Plymouth, Taranaki and its scenery.
