New Zealand - Railway - The New Zealand Government line from Wellington to the Wairarapa and Napier crosses the Rimutaka Range, a remarkably steep ascent, the grade in parts being one in twelve. The climb from Cross Creek was made with the assistance of a Chas. H. Fell engine, which had special gear for gripping the centre grip rail raised some nine inches above the other two.
